9/10 Week 3 - Started planting!

We are Cornies! This week we came up with our team name and that gonna be "Cornies" because we are growing the CORNS! 

We spent some time to figure out the layout of our field, and mapped out how many rows we will be planting.

Two weeks in and our crops in the greenhouse were growing quick. It's time to transplant them into the field. We used tape measure and string to keep our row neat and we planted the following things:

Row 1: corn corn corn corn corn corn corn corn corn corn squash corn squash corn squash corn squash
Row 2: okra okra okra okra okra okra okra okra okra okra okra okra okra okra okra okra okra okra 

We also updated our objectives into:
1. Differences between direct seeded and tranplanted Temptress corn
2. The effect on hay mulch vs wood chips mulch on Super Sweet Cherry Tomato
3. Intercropping of squash and corn vs mono-cropping of squash

11/12 Week 12

 This past week we had to prepare for a freeze that was set to arrive on the 11th. Our farm manager has a cover for the plot so we went out and used cinder blocks to hold a sheet over the whole plot. Prior to placing the sheet we harvested as many of teh crops as possible. This included some squash and some corn. When we came back after the freeze it seems as though the sheet was able to break loose and some of our crop was exposed to the harsh freeze conditions. We removed the sheet to assess damage. A large portion of our tomatoes were damaged but photosynthetic tissue deeper in the canopy seemed to have survived. We pruned any dead tissues and cleaned up our plot. At this point only the tomatoes and Broccoli had any more crop to give so we left those to harvest later.

10/1 Week 6

           Week 6                    Today the group assessed how the hay was doing to mitigate the weeds in our plot, recognized the crop progression, and also noticed some leaf minor damage to the foliage on the summer squash. Although there was some damage, we were impressed how far along the summer squash is coming with nice big green leaves starting to really grow. We also noticed some unidentified damage to the corn foliage; suspecting the southern moth, or the corn ear worm for two possibilities of pests.  We then  weeded, and also coordinated as a team to delegate each weekly post for our plot. We noticed the most prominent weed was sedge, the hay seemed to not help as much as we thought to prevent sedge growth. 10/29 Week 10

This week our group did some weed maintenance as well as checked in to see how our crops were doing. We pruned some of the tomato plants as well as made some adjustments to our tomato twine to adjust for growth. We also were able to identify some different diseases and pests on our crops with the help of Zach.
